Warsaw’s river of secrets: Another historic weapon found just weeks after medieval sword

A rusty infantry saber, likely used by grenadiers or non-commissioned officers in the second half of the 18th century, has been found in Warsaw’s Vistula River.

A rusty infantry saber, likely used by grenadiers or non-commissioned officers in the second half of the 18th century, has been found in Warsaw’s Vistula River.

The find comes just weeks after a well-preserved medieval sword was also found in the same river by an unsuspecting fisherman.  

The newly found curved weapon, featuring a handguard and a chipped blade, was handed over by an anonymous finder to the city’s conservator of monuments. 

Michał Mackiewicz, curator at the Polish Army Museum, examined the artifact and concluded: “It is an infantry saber. I would date it to the second half of the 18th century.
